Group camping fails in a specific way: four people bring a stove and nobody brings the tent pegs. The gear is shared but the list is not, so everybody packs for themselves and hopes.
Share this list with the group before anyone starts packing. Once someone has claimed the stove, everyone else can see it is covered and leave theirs at home.
The safety section is short on purpose. A head torch, a first aid kit and a way to make water safe are the things you will actually regret leaving behind.
How to get the most out of it
Decide on shared kit first
Tents, stoves, fuel and cool boxes are the expensive and bulky items. Settle who is bringing each one before anyone packs personal things, so you do not end up with two stoves and no gas.
Pitch the tent at home once
If the tent has not been used for a while, put it up in the garden or a park before the trip. Missing pegs and broken poles are far easier to replace before you leave.
Check the forecast and adjust the clothing section
Nights are colder than people expect. Add an extra warm layer and dry socks to the list if the overnight temperature drops below about ten degrees.
Use the list to pack up as well
When you leave the site, go through the list again. It is the easiest way to make sure the mallet and the head torch come home with you.
